Nymphaea Stellata Characteristics
This species is very variable and includes populations of different flowers, the flowers measure between 3 and 15 cm, the petals are elongated, linear to lanceolate and white with violet to blue tones. There are also hybrids with closely related African species used as ornamentals (eg N. caerulea and N. capensis). In Sri Lanka, an introduced water lily with large violet-blue flowers (“Nil Manel”) was mistaken for Nymphaea nouchali, but this has recently been found to be a mistake.
Nymphaea nouchali, imported from Sri Lanka, forms submerged leaves in the aquarium that resemble those of the nearby Nymphaea minuta from Madagascar. In aquarium conditions, large flowers of about 7 cm of very pleasant fragrance appear, the flower stalk rises about 10 cm above the water level. They are open during the day. The petals are narrow and white with a bluish-red tint towards the edge.
