Characteristics of Limnophila Sessiliflora "Ambulia"
It is an undemanding plant from Southeast Asia, often sold as "Ambulia." In its natural habitat, it is found on the edges of stagnant waters and on the banks of rivers and streams. In the aquarium hobby, Limnophila Sessiliflora is the most common Limnophila species and is grown in many aquatic plant nurseries.
Limnophila Sessiliflora is a robust, highly adaptable plant capable of coping with a wide range of environmental conditions (pH 5.5-8, temperature 22-28°C). Its resemblance to some Cabomba species makes it a sought after aquarium plant, as its light requirements are considerably lower. If there is enough light and an injection of CO2, Limnophila Sessiliflora becomes more compact and more attractive. Balanced fertilization with micronutrients and the addition of iron are necessary for healthy growth. Lots of light and plenty of micronutrients will result in a slightly reddish coloration of the shoot tips.
It is pruned like any other stem plant. Cutting off the top shoot and replanting it in the substrate is the easiest breeding method. As soon as it reaches the surface of the water, Limnophila Sessiliflora begins to form a large number of side shoots. Growing along the surface, some of the shoots can also submerge. Its rapid growth makes regular pruning a must.
Limnophila Sessiliflora rarely forms flowers when kept in an aquarium, however, if they are grown emerged, purple flowers will form along its stem.
Its vitality and uncontrolled longitudinal growth make Limnophila Sessiliflora a background plant. Under relatively low light intensities, it grows more compactly and more slowly, which makes maintenance much easier. Its finely structured leaves contrast nicely with many other aquarium plants.
