Characteristics of Hygrophila Polysperma
East Indian Hygrophila normally grows so fast that it is important to prevent it from crowding out other plants, so shoots should be pruned regularly. Like other stem plants, it is easily propagated by cuttings. Even fallen leaves floating on the surface form small new plants.
Hygrophila Polysperma is a highly variable species with different leaf shapes and colors, depending to some extent on the light supplied. H. Polysperma "standard" develops underwater in an oval to lanceolate shape, with light green to somewhat brown leaves.
It is a robust and highly adaptable plant native to India and Bhutan. It is one of the most widespread plants in the hobby.
There are few aquarium plants as robust and undemanding. Light intensity does not play an important role for its growth. However, under less intense light, the plant grows more slowly and develops smaller leaves. Their nutrient requirements are also easily met. The hardness of the water has no influence on its growth rate. It also does not require any CO2 injection. Bottom line: Hygrophila polysperma is the perfect plant for aquarium beginners.
Hygrophila Polysperma forms many lateral shoots, which makes propagation extremely easy. Simply cut off some side shoots or the top shoot and replant them in the soil. Since it is a fast grower, the plant needs to be pruned every 2-3 weeks anyway.
A clump of H. Polysperma is a fixation point, especially suitable for the middle zone of the aquarium.
