Features of Pogostemon Erectus
Pogostemon Erectus originally collected for purposes aquaristic in the western indian state of Maharashtra, and was presented under the wrong name "Rotala Verticillaris“. During the last few years it has been used in many aquariums, mainly in the USA but also increasingly in Europe.
At first glance, it looks a lot like Rotala verticillaris and some varieties of Rotala Mexicana, however, their submerged growth differs from both by their more strictly vertical growth habit and larger overall dimensions. Its emerged form further clarifies the differences: while R. Verticillaris and R. Mexicana, both belonging to the family Lythraceae, they have quite discreet flowers sitting in the axils of the leaves, Pogostemon Erectus, of the family Lamiaceae, shows very different decorative spikes with violet flowers, quite similar to those of the other species of Pogostemon known.
