Characteristics of Schismatoglottis Roseospatha
With its narrow, glossy and dark green leaves, this little-known plant is very interesting for aquarium design, for example in biotope aquariums.
It is a plant native to southern Sarawak in Borneo. It is an epiphyte, attached to the rock along the strong and fast water currents of the rain forest, comparable to the related species of Bucephalandra.
Although it is only temporarily flooded in the wild during the rainy season, it does well as a constantly submerged aquarium plant. The leaves are narrowly ovate and lanceolate, dark green and somewhat shiny, with a slightly hard outline and a long tip.
The creeping rhizome has fairly long roots. The stems of the young leaves and the tips of the rhizomes are reddish brown. Stomata on the surface of the leaf appear underwater as silver spots. The size of the leaf is highly variable depending on the conditions and the age of the plant.
Although Schismatoglottis Roseospatha has been known in the hobby for years, it is a rare plant to find.
