Characteristics of Vesicularia Ferriei - “Weeping Moss”
This moss is said to have been imported from China. It was identified as Vesicularia Ferrei by Prof. BC Tan (Singapore). This species is also distributed in southern Japan. In nature it has a creeping growth form and grows on moist rocks covered with sandy substrate, on riverbanks and on moist creek soils.
The submerged form of this moss can be identified by its downward-growing buds reminiscent of a weeping willow.
The leaves and relatively broad leaf cells closely resemble those of V. montagnei "Christmas Moss", however, these leaves do not end in a point but are more acute and relatively obtuse. V. montagnei and other species of Vesicularia they can also develop hanging shoots, but not as bent as those of V. ferriei, whose shoots are clearly bent down. However, in very low light, its growth pattern can be more horizontal.
Vesicularia ferriei first became popular among aquascaping enthusiasts and hobbyists in Asia, but as it is relatively undemanding regarding lighting and fertilization, and thanks to its beautiful appearance, it has also spread to European aquariums in a short time. . Unfortunately, true weeping moss is difficult to find, as there are many other mosses that are also sold under that name that do not grow as pronounced downward.
