Characteristics Sagittaria Subulata
La Sagittaria Subulata plant is native to the eastern US and South America, where it grows in fresh and brackish water. Especially in estuaries it is known to form vast meadows. This species of plant with the shape of an arrowhead is a aquarium plant very popular and has long been cultivated by most major aquatic plant nurseries and is commonly found in stores. Plants sold under the name of Sagittarius Pusilla they remain smaller than the “normal” Subulata, however there is reason to believe that they are no different from the Subulata variety.
Sagittaria Subulata is one of the aquarium plants of longer duration. It is ideal for low tech aquariums or without equipment, without a CO2 system; It tolerates a high carbonate hardness, also its light demands are moderate. However, Sagittaria Subulata is somewhat susceptible to iron deficiency, manifesting itself in new pale leaves. This North American aquatic plant is also very temperature tolerant, suitable for cold and tropical water aquariums. For their low requirements, this species is highly recommended for beginners in aquariums.
Although it is sometimes recommended as a lawn in the foreground, in the long run it does not fall short. It is very suitable to form large, natural-looking thickets, such as grass in the middle and bottom, care must be taken that the plant does not invade the slower growing smaller plants with their stolons.
