Paludario - What is it and what characteristics does it have?

A Paludarium, also called an Aquarium or waterfall aquarium, is the fusion of an aquarium with a terrarium. Being able to maintain plants both in and out of the water.

WHAT IS A PALUDARIO?

For the most part, Paludar they are used as a habitat for small animals, fish, amphibians like dendrobates frogs or crabs. Normally, an aquatic part passes into a terrestrial area making the fusion between an aquarium and a terrarium. There is a special form of paludario, the so-called “riparian". That focuses on the design of a waterfront. Also the so-called Vivariums that although they tend to focus more on the keeping animals and plants in a land areaThey also have a small part of water and humidity. The Pigeons recreate swamp-like biotopes, accompanied by higher air humidity. To maintain these conditions, special technical or structural measures are necessary.

Addition Invoices where animals are kept, there are also designs that focus only in aquatic plants. These designs are closely related to the forms of growing plants in emerged and Wabi-Kusa and the dry start method "Dry Start Method". Thanks to the special design of the Paludarium urns, aquarium plants can be grown and seen both in their forms submerged (below the water line) like emerged (above the water line). In this way we can observe the differences between plants that even being the same species, these can present great differences in their appearance, shape of the leaves and color. As well as plants for paludarium they are not strictly aquatic.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

The materials for a Paludarium they are quite similar to those of an aquarium, for example, filtration and lights. The technical team must adapt to slightly different circumstances. An important factor to consider in a aquaterial or paludarium it's high moisture. We will take a closer look at the individual points of each of its components below.

FILTRATION FOR PALUDARIO

Basically, the aquatic part of a Paludarium you need the same equipment as a classic aquarium. The water should also be kept clean by using an appropriate filter for this form of urn. You should consider the small amount of water in a Paludarium, or rather the low level of water in the urn when you choose the filter. Some internal filters they can be placed in a corner and operate at low water levels. It is preferable to use a external filter, you will only need to adapt the inlet and outlet pipes to the water level. The filter inlet must be sunk enough not to absorb air. As a filter outlet, we recommend a flute outlet to distribute the water through its holes and place it on the back wall for a Paludarium with waterfallAnother solution could be to divide the end of a thick filter hose into different smaller hoses with a diameter of 4/6 mm. This slows down the flow of water and you can irrigate different areas and groups of plants individually and precisely. If we are talking about a mini paludarium we could do water changes manually, although a filter is always the most advisable.

LIGHTING

The lighting system should be chosen so that it provides light to plants both below and above the water line. Here you can choose systems lighting with adjustable feet to add a little bit of height or hanging screens. In this way, sets of plants of higher height can be maintained, you can use this Light for Puddles or also lighting for standard aquariums that fits the measurements of the urn.

PALUDARY HUMIDITY AND MAINTENANCE

Special attention must be paid to the humidity in the Paludario, Acuaterrario or Aquarium with waterfall. If you keep classic aquarium plants in its emerged form with the normal humidity in the environment, most likely many will dry out and die. Humidity can be maintained at a sufficient level with a closed system with doors or covers much easier than in a Open pallet. When you use an open urn, you need to spray the plants with water on a regular basis, which can be done manually (with a spray nozzle) or automatically with the help of some automatic spray equipment. The spray systems and ultrasonic nebulizers available for terrariums they are quite suitable for this purpose. An easy alternative to this is the spray method that we explained earlier. Another option is with filtration: Using a multi-channel filter output (for example, a flute output). If you shape the layout of the hardscape and plants in a staggered fashion, simply place the filter outlets as high as possible on your Paludarium, so that the water can flow permanently down over the plants, stones and wood and supply them with enough moisture in the substrate. He maintenance of a Paludarium It is very similar to that of an aquarium with respect to water changes, with the differences that we have mentioned previously.

OTHER ELEMENTS OF THE TEAM

If higher temperatures are required (for example, some fish for paludarium), you must add a Heater. Here you can also resort to more compact and shorter variations offered by different brands of heaters. If you want to supply your submerged plants with an optimal amount of nutrients, a CO2 system It may be advisable. As with the filter inlets, the low water level must be taken into account, so you should choose a diffuser that can be installed correctly.
