Characteristics of Bacopa Monnieri
The Bacopa Monnieri aquarium plant is found in wide parts of the tropics and subtropics, growing above and below water in lakes, rivers and ponds, even in brackish water.
Bacopa Monnieri grows relatively slowly under any conditions in the aquarium. It is easy to grow and tolerates hard, alkaline water (pH value up to 8), however it prefers good lighting. The CO2 supply is not absolutely necessary, but it does improve growth, as for all aquarium plants. Nutrient deficiencies are not easily visible, except that growth is slowed down. In aquariums with high CO2 concentration and intense lighting, a regular supply of macro and micronutrients is necessary. Like other plants, this Bacopa is easily propagated by cuttings. It may also develop creeping, runner-like shoots at the base of the stems.
This relatively small-leaved Bacopa species looks good as a solid in the middle or background where it provides a contrasting accent with its light green coloration. It is also suitable for creating "plant lanes" in Dutch style aquariums. Bacopa Monnieri is also interesting as an emerged plant for paludarios and Wabi-Kusa. It has a creeping or hanging growth form in its terrestrial form. With good lighting, one can expect its pretty white to light mauve blooms.
