Characteristics of Aponogeton Longiplumulosus
This species often blooms in the aquarium, after which it forms purple biennial inflorescences. The plant can be propagated well using the many adventitious tuber plants.
Aponogeton longiplumulosus comes from the strong water currents of northwest Madagascar, it has leaves up to 40cm long, to which is added a stem length of 18cm. The slightly transparent, green, ribbon-shaped leaves have a distinctly wavy leaf margin. As a rule, the biennial inflorescence is purple.
This bulbous plant is an aquarium plant that needs nutrients and light. But it can also be used between low and medium-tall plants or as a solitary plant in the center of the aquarium. As it originates from waters with currents, well-filtered, clear and clean water, a light current and temperatures that are not too high are recommended. A strong current should be avoided, as it would prevent post-budding development and flower formation.
Aponogeton longiplumulosus, thrives at water temperatures between 20 and 26 degrees C. Prefer soft water a moderately hard worth pH between 5.0 and 8.0. In general, the lighting requirements are low.
To favor the development of the plant, the use of balls of slow-release fertilizers that will be placed under the roots is recommended. It has low to medium nutrient requirements and is satisfied by the natural concentration of CO2 in an aquarium with fish. Although the growth stagnates from time to time, it sprouts again without problems after a few weeks of rest. A. longiplumulosus can be propagated by seeds, but also by young plants, which are formed on the tuber of the mother plant.
